To identify yours, look up past the damper plate for a stamped model number on the frame rail, or measure the firebox opening width and the lintel-to-throat height. The critical gotcha: Gelco’s extended-frame GTD-EX series was built for deeper smoke chambers common in 1970s-1990s Santa Clarita tract homes, especially in Valencia and Newhall. Here’s what you can safely check yourself: open the damper fully, shine a flashlight up, and look for the model stamp or measure the opening. If the plate is visibly cracked or the handle mechanism is broken, you’ve confirmed what we need to know. Don’t force a stuck handle; the cast iron can shatter, and a falling damper plate is heavy enough to damage the firebox or injure someone below.

What goes wrong with DIY: throat dampers require working inside the firebox with your arms extended upward, often in poor light, with creosote debris falling into your eyes and lungs. The pivot pins are under spring tension on some Gelco models, and the frame bolts may be seized into decades-old refractory.
